How to choose the right ring size?

You’ve found the pendant of your dreams, or you’d like to give a silver necklace or chain as a gift, but when it comes to choosing the right length, you’re left wondering. How do you choose the perfect length of chain to show off a beautiful pendant or to match your figure? What are the different lengths of chain available for men and women, and how are they worn?

It’s not always easy to choose the right necklace size, so here are a few tips to help you find the ideal length.

How is finger size defined?

First of all, it would be interesting to define what we call a “finger size” or “ring size”.

In France, the ring size is the circumference of your finger expressed in millimeters. So if your finger circumference is 54 mm (5.4 centimetres), the corresponding size is 54. The size is therefore defined by the circumference of your finger.

Unfortunately, almost every country uses a different numbering system. And even if you know your French ring size, you may be slightly confused if you want to buy a ring abroad.

That’s why we’ve drawn up a table of ring size conversions by country, to help you determine your ring size outside France.

1 – Measure the circumference of your finger

Using a string

Take a relatively thin piece of string, or a strip of paper, and wrap it around your second phalanx (the finger on which the ring will be worn). Make sure it’s not too tight or too loose. Mark the point where the string joins with a black felt-tip pen, then unwind and transfer it to a ruler to obtain the length.

As explained above, the measurement obtained (in mm) is your ring size. So if your finger circumference is 54 mm (5.4 centimetres), the corresponding size is 54.

  1. Take a piece of string and wrap it around the finger you wish to wear your ring on.
  2. Draw a line at the junction of the string with a felt-tip pen
  3. Unwind the string and measure the length between the two lines.

With a tape measure

Arm yourself with a tape measure and wrap it carefully around the second phalanx of the finger you wish to wear your ring on. Transfer the size obtained to the seam of the tape measure to find the circumference of your finger. The tape should not be too tight or too loose.

  1. Cut out the ring.
  2. Cut a slot at location A
  3. Wrap the ring around your finger, numbers facing outwards
  4. Thread end B through slot A, and pull gently to leave enough room for the joint.
  5. Your ring size corresponds to the number aligned with slot A
  6. If the measurement is between 2 digits, choose the next larger size.
  7. The sizes on the ring cutter are US sizes. For French sizes, please refer to the table of size correspondences by country.

2 – Measure one of your rings directly

To calculate your ring size, you can also measure the inside diameter of one of your rings and refer to the diameter/size correspondence table below:

To do this

  1. Place your ring on a flat surface
  2. Measure the ring’s inside diameter. Caution: measure where the diameter is widest, holding the ruler straight.
  3. Transfer the diameter to the diameter/size table to determine your ring size.

he measurement obtained by this method can easily be erroneous. ring size being the circumference, it is obtained by multiplying the diameter by Pi = 3.14.

Therefore, a measurement error of half a millimeter on the diameter of your ring will result in an error of 1.5 mm on its circumference, i.e. a size and a half difference.

So take every precaution when measuring the inside diameter of your ring, and don’t hesitate to repeat the measurement several times if necessary.

– Using a Printable Ring Binder

Printable ring gauge Planetys :

determine your ring size with our printable ring gauge

  1. o measure your finger circumference, download and print this document
  2. mportant : o print your ring gauge in real size, check that the scale on the gauge measures 10 cm.
  3. Take one of your rings (preferably a wedding ring) that fits the finger you wish to measure (finger sizes can vary from one hand to another).
  4. dare to use this ring on circles. hen one of the circles touches the inside of your ring without the gray background appearing, the corresponding number is your ring size.
  5. f your ring is between 2 sizes, choose the larger one.

– Have your finger measured by a jeweller

his is probably the surest way to find out your ring size. Jewelers use ring gauges or triboulets, which give an exact measurement of your finger size.

os Questions:

“I’m hesitating between two sizes, which one should I choose?”

f your measurements fall between two sizes, it’s best to take the larger one. n fact, it’s always more comfortable to wear a slightly larger ring than one that’s too tight. Don’t forget that your finger size varies throughout the day.
